Marketplaces need supply before the launch
Before launch, the team did the hard work of lining up supply and a waiting audience—so launch day had something real behind it.

Lawrence describes months of outreach before SpotHero launched. By the time the service was ready, the team had a list of people who already wanted to use it.
Launch is the handoff, not the beginning
For a two-sided marketplace, the first customer needs a credible experience immediately. That usually means acquiring supply, learning the operational details, and collecting early demand before the visible launch moment.
Build the first loop deliberately
Instead of treating pre-launch work as waiting, treat it as the first version of distribution: create enough inventory and enough informed demand for the loop to begin working.
This is an interpretation of Lawrence’s 2013 account.
